A restaurant is a business that prepares and serves food and drink to customers, generally served and eaten on premises. However, some restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services, or drive-through capability. When patrons are served and consume food and drink on the premises the establishment is referred to as a sit-down restaurant. These establishments are often individually owned and unique, rather than chains which present a unifying décor at all their locations. When patron drive-through or serve themselves, it is considered a fast food or buffet restaurant. Drive-through, fast-food establishments are most often chains of restaurants, often franchised to an individual owner, but exhibiting little difference in décor or menu from location to location. McDonald’s and Burger King are examples of franchised establishments.
Restaurants vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of cuisines and service models, and can range from unpretentious lunching or dining places catering to people working nearby, with simple food served in simple settings at low prices, to expensive establishments serving refined food and wines in a formal setting. In the former case, customers usually wear casual clothing. In the latter case, depending on culture and local traditions, customers might be required to wear semi-casual, semi-formal, or even in rare cases formal wear.
Typically, when customers sit at tables, a waiter takes their order, and the food is brought to the table when it is ready. The customer pays the bill after dining. In finer restaurants there will be a host or hostess or even a maître d'hôtel to welcome customers and to seat them. Some restaurants also known for their wine selection will employ sommeliers. In fast-food restaurants, the order is taken by a cashier who collects the money prior to dining, and the customer seats themselves and buses their own table settings.
Restaurants often specialize in certain types of food or present a certain unifying, and often entertaining, theme. For example, there are seafood restaurants, vegetarian restaurants or ethnic restaurants. Generally speaking, restaurants selling food characteristic of the local culture are simply called restaurants, while restaurants selling food of foreign cultural origin are called accordingly by their ethnicity, such as a Chinese restaurant or a French restaurant.
